Could you eat rat jerky? Or roasted leg of cockroach?

A few thousand years from now, the people of Earth have engaged in biological warfare and have nearly destroyed their world and themselves. They’ve reverted to a much less high-tech state. Mutated cockroaches and rats are the main food animals left on their world and the reduced population is on the verge of extinction.

Enter the Exarths, descendants of folk who left Earth centuries before the destruction. They petition their universe-spanning government, the Interspecies Federated Coalition (IFC), to allow them to go to the aid of their distant cousins. Their objective: to restore their home world and save what’s left of its now-primitive people.

They get permission and a program of refurbishment through biological methods is established. Nicknamed SpORE (Special Operations for the Restoration of Earth), operatives of a branch of the Explorer Division of the IFC Navy are used for implementation.

These operatives, called Seeders and Sowers,  reseed the waterways and replenish the forests and other flora of the planet. While these are the only duties that the Seeders perform, the Sowers are also charged with restoring the fertility of the people of Earth.

They are infected with a virus that was developed for this purpose, and it can only be passed on through – well, let’s just say that they get the job done. The mission can sometimes be dangerous but after fifty-eight years the program is a success and is winding down.

Enter one of the last of the Sowers.

As are all such agents, he is young, smart, and dedicated to completing his mission. Will he be able to hold his own with primitive males who take exception to finding him in their camp? How well will he survive a night with eight native females? And, when his partner is trapped by a newly discovered hazard that’s killing the trees of the forest and threatening to reverse the restoral efforts, will he be able to save her and help avert the impending disaster?

These and other questions will be answered in this stand-alone novel.

A Shot at the Big Time: A Maxima City Talent Novel by [McMullen, Christina]

Available at Amazon

I liked this story. To expand on that statement – I really liked this story! It is quite a different take on characters with superhuman powers told from the point of view of a Talent, as they’re called, who’s not on the side of the “good” guys.

Frostbyte, a female Talent who admits to being on the other side of good, is determined to exact revenge on a member of the hero faction, Magnificent Man, for a traumatic incident suffered by her family when she was a kid.  She finally gets her chance at moving up into the big league of villains and prepares to deal out her payback. Things escalate and s**t happens.

That’s all I’m gonna say.

Well, except for this: The story moves along at a good pace; it’s got satire, a little romance, a bit of angst, some heavy drinking, fighting, IT fixes, stolen panties, and a woman longing for pockets (not necessarily in that order), but best of all, it’s got FUNNY!

I would recommend this book to anyone who’s ever read a super-hero comic book and/or to anyone who needs a good laugh.

Five stars – for making me snort.

Synopsis:

Juri Turner, the human-born dragon, has ensured that Mur, the magical world next door to Earth, will never again be endangered by its unstable core.

She has also managed to avoid an unwanted marriage to an utter creep of a dragon, but then, she finds herself in a battle, alongside her dragon guardian, Prince Tetharia, and his sister, Princess Terinia, against a powerful demon who threatens not only the dragon kingdom of Tausarae but also the entire world of Mur.

Meanwhile, two large spaceships of the aliens who invaded Earth over two decades ago, are en route to that planet, chasing runaway human slaves from Alpha Centauri, and behind them are even more of the big ugly creatures called scorbs, with an even larger fleet that if not stopped will scour the planet clean of every human.

Duty-bound, Juri will have to help vanquish the demon and save Mur from falling under its rule, and she is, once again, obligated to help defeat the alien invaders who are hell-bent on destroying the humans of Earth.

Again, the fate of two worlds rests on the small, golden shoulders of one young dragon who never asked for anything more than to be left alone to live out her less than fortunate life in peace.

She will do her best to stand up to all the difficulties involved in performing her duty, but will she be able to handle the unexpected changes these events bring about?
